Casalino’s video series “girls cant…” focuses on the risks minimum wage workers face in their daily tasks. Having worked as a baker, bartender, barista, window cleaner, and janitor (all for minimum wage) Casalino flips the repetitive movements and tasks into ridiculous ineffective actions through video art and performance. The risk of being a working woman is high, walking home from work at night, dealing with drunk clients, and existing in roles where her body and skills are undervalued and exploited. After attending grad school in Toronto the class tension and financial gap between her and her peers pushed her to explore her relationship to labour and work. Now a graduate with an MFA Casalino is back to working as a barista. At least she can laugh about it.
